January 2007 VOL.16 NO.1

The second half of 2006 was a busy season for the US-Angola Chamber of Commerce.  One of the highlights was the Trade Mission/Business Symposium held October 4-6 in Angola. Originally, the mission had been planned for early June, but the World Cup conflicted with the timing of the event. A report on the Business Symposium is posted elsewhere on this website. Suffice it to say here that the Business Symposium was well attended and included a number of outstanding presentations.

We are especially grateful to the Minister Deputy to the Prime Minister, Aguinaldo Jaime, the Minister of Industry, Joaquim David, and the Vice Minister of Commerce, Cruz Neto for their participation and presentations at the Business Symposium.

With respect to the trade mission itself, participants traveling to Angola included representatives from BP, The Boeing Company, Citizens Energy, US Department of Energy, The Foreign Policy Group, Honeywell, IPX Communications, Millennium Group Worldwide, Nationwide Equipment, Samuels International, Tara Wildlife, Waco Africa, and US Department of Commerce.

Conservation of the Black Sable
by Pedro Vaz Pinto

In the remote woodlands of the Central Angolan plateau, a pristine region characterized by broadleaf semi-deciduous forests (the Angolan miombo), extensive floodplains and peculiar grasslands dominated by termite mounds, lives a special and almost mythological creature: The giant antelope.
The adult male with its typical coal-black (female and young are brown-reddish) color and carrying long curved horns that can reach 65 inches in length, is often considered the most magnificent antelope that ever lived.  For obvious reasons, the giant sable was chosen as the national symbol of Angola, featuring in the national currency, the national soccer team is know as palancas (the sables), and is present in the logo of TAAG, the national airliner.  And yes, you can also find it in the logo of the US-Angola Chamber of Commerce!

About 180 guests attended, including the US Ambassador, Vice Minister of Industry, President of the Angola Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Chief of the National Police, and Chief of Mission for Angola at the IMF.
